After stepping back from Google’s daily operations in late 2019, Sergey Brin believed retirement would give him time to slow down, reflect, and explore his long-standing interest in physics. He imagined himself spending relaxed days reading, thinking, and learning in cafés—an idealized vision of post-career life.

That plan quickly unraveled.

As the COVID-19 pandemic shut down public spaces and isolated much of the world, Brin found himself without the stimulation that had fueled his career for decades. What began as a break soon felt like a decline in mental sharpness. Without challenging problems to solve, he admitted he started to feel disengaged and unproductive.

When Google cautiously reopened parts of its offices, Brin wasted little time returning. What began as casual involvement soon turned into deep engagement with one of the most important technology projects of the decade: Gemini, Google’s flagship artificial intelligence model.

According to Brin, having a technical and creative outlet again made a dramatic difference. The opportunity to work hands-on with cutting-edge AI restored the sense of purpose and intellectual excitement that retirement lacked. Looking back, he believes remaining retired would have been a serious mistake.

A Candid Look at Google’s AI Hesitation

Brin also shared an unusually frank assessment of Google’s early AI strategy. Despite being the company behind the groundbreaking 2017 research paper on Transformers—a foundation for today’s large language models—Google hesitated to push conversational AI products to the public.

The reason, Brin explained, was fear. Early chatbots often produced inaccurate or nonsensical outputs, and Google worried about reputational risk. That caution, he said, resulted in underinvestment and slower public deployment.

Meanwhile, competitors moved faster. OpenAI, in Brin’s words, “ran with it,” bringing AI chatbots directly to users and reshaping the global tech landscape in the process.

Despite this, Brin emphasized that Google never lost its core strengths. The company’s long-term investments in neural network research, custom AI hardware, and massive data center infrastructure give it an advantage that few organizations can match. At the highest levels of AI development, scale matters—and Google still has it.

Advice for Students in an AI-Driven World

When asked what students should study in an era where AI can write code, Brin challenged the idea that technical fields are becoming obsolete. He warned against abandoning engineering or computer science out of fear that AI will replace those skills.

In fact, he argued the opposite. If AI is capable of excelling at technical work, it is likely just as strong—if not stronger—in humanities fields often seen as “safe” from automation. The key, he suggested, is learning how to think critically and work alongside intelligent systems, not running from them.

Lessons From Past Mistakes

Brin also reflected on one of his most well-known missteps: Google Glass. He acknowledged that the product was rushed to market before it was affordable, refined, or fully ready for widespread adoption.

The experience taught him a humbling lesson—many founders believe they are building the next revolutionary product, but timing and execution matter as much as vision. Innovation, he implied, requires patience as well as ambition.

Today, Brin says what keeps him fully engaged is the sheer speed of AI progress. The field is evolving so rapidly that stepping away, even briefly, can leave someone behind.

For Brin, working on Gemini isn’t just about building a product—it’s about staying connected to one of the fastest-moving technological transformations in history. The pace, the creativity, and the constant breakthroughs are what drew him back—and what continue to keep him involved.
